During the fall, the world becomes a playground of fun. There are leaves for jumping in, apples for picking and pumpkins for carving. Fall should not the time to hibernate. Whether you are beginning a fitness and wellness plan or looking for new and different opportunities to remain fit, there is hardly a better time of year to keep yourself and your family busy and healthy.
Most summer fruits may be out of season, but fall provides a savory harvest of different healthy produce. It’s an opportune time to work on healthy eating habits for the winter. Indulge in pumpkin, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, avocados, beans, broccoli and cauliflower. They are packed with Vitamins A and C – antioxidants to help the body ward off illness. Choosing locally grown foods will give you and your family the most nutritional punch since the time between picking and eating is shorter.
It’s also a great excuse to encourage some fun fall family activities.
- Turn leaf-raking and other fall yard work into fun family activities.
- Go to some fall sporting events. Bundle up, bring some healthy snacks, and make a day of it!
- Pick pumpkins or apples at a local farm or orchard.
- Have a Halloween or Scary movieathon on a rainy day.
- Participate in a haunted trail or through a corn maze.
- Take a trip to the zoo; it wont be as busy and you’ll be able to enjoy the animals when the weather is a bit cooler.
- Check your local websites or newspapers for fun runs and events. Turkey trots, jingle bell walks, Halloween runs, and other themed activities can make getting fit more enjoyable.
- Try accessible parks and trails in your area that you haven’t yet explored. Visit your city or state parks and recreation website and see what’s nearby and exciting.
