What’s the Relationship Between Breast Surgery and Breast Cancer?

Q: Is there any relationship between cosmetic breast surgery and breast cancer?

A: If you're unhappy with how your breasts look, and are willing to balance the cost of surgery (both financial, and physical) with a new figure, then there's no reason not to change the size and/or shape of your breasts.

There are certain dangers inherent in the surgery itself, as there are with any surgery. If you choose silicone or saline implants, the entire process can last several months; it can be quite painful; and your implants will probably need to be replaced at some point.

But thankfully, there's no known link between cosmetic breast surgery – implants, reconstruction, reductions, or enhancements – and breast cancer. If implants are positioned a certain way, it may make it more difficult for the radiologist to read any future mammograms; so be sure to discuss this with your surgeon before going forward.
