A part of everyone’s body care regimen is trying to maintain a healthy weight.  Here are some common weight loss myths that will help you in your effort to maintain your health and beauty!

Health and Beauty Weight Loss Myth #1- Low fat foods are a healthy choice.  Actually, this is not always true.  The reason being is that low-fat, or reduced-fat items, may have nearly as many calories as a higher-fat version because ingredients like sugar often replace the fat to make the product taste better.

Health and Beauty Weight Loss Myth #2 – Eating at night causes weight gain.  As long as you don’t take in more calories than you burn in a day, you won’t gain weight.  If you don’t gorge, you’re not in danger of gaining weight.

Health and Beauty Weight Loss Myth #3- High-fructose corn syrup is more fattening than sugar.  Actually, both are very close in chemical composition and neither type of sweetener offers any nutritional value.

Health and Beauty Weight Loss Myth #4- The treadmill accurately calculates your calorie burn.  Whether you use a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike, the number of calories you actually burn tend be 10%-15% lower than what’s displayed on the screen.  This is because most machines don’t take into account percent body fat, height, sex, age, resting heart rate, or if someone is holding onto the handles (which reduces the workload).  Also, the mechanical assistance of machines allows your body to do less work.

Health and Beauty Weight Loss Myth #5- To lose weight, cut carbs or fat.  A study by the “New England Journal of Medicine”, gleaned the following results.  For 2 years, all participants followed one of four calorie-restricted diets with varying amounts of carbs, protein, and fat.  At the end of the 2 years, all participants lost approximately the same amount of weight.  This proves that calories are the most important factor for weight loss.

Health and Beauty Weight Loss Myth #6 – You can “make up” weekend splurges.  Saturday and Sunday represent 30% of the week, so too many “slip-ups” will put you on the wrong side of the scale.  A recent study indicated that dieters who ate too much on the weekend, cancelled out the good they did during the weight, resulting in a -0- weight loss (or weight gain) for the week.

Health and Beauty Weight Loss Myth #7 – You have to ban “bad” foods.  Trying to totally cut out indulgent foods completely usually backfires and you’re more likely to go overboard on your vices.  You should probably allow for small treats 20% of the time.
