The health articles today can be very confusing – some say coffee is good for those with Type-2 Diabetes, then some also say it can be bad.  Who do you really believe?

Here are some pros and cons:

Pros

  • Researchers say coffee can raise levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and improve the ratio of HDL to LDL (bad) cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease, which is the Number One Killer of people with diabetes.
  • Another study found that drinking 4 or more cups of coffee a day lowered a person’s risk of being hospitalized for heart rhythm problems (arrhythmia) by 18%.
  • And another study of 70,000 women found that those who drank at least a cup of coffee with lunch were one-third less likely to develop Type-2 Diabetes than non-coffee drinkers.  This was true for decaf or caffeinated coffee, with or without sugar.  But, this is for drinking coffee at lunch time only – any other time of the day did not influence diabetes risk at all.

Cons

  • A study from Duke University found that, among those with Type-2 Diabetes, caffeine may cause blood sugar to spike a couple of hours after it is consumed. In fact, caffeine seemed to raise glucose levels by as much as oral diabetes medications lowered it!

So, if you have Type-2 Diabetes, should you drink coffee or not?  Anyone really know?
