I ran across this information about herbal medicines in a health article I was recently reading.

It states that a study in the Journal of Forensic Sciences found that unregulated and untested herbal medicines are often unreliable.  Their findings are as follows:

  • 36 of 251 Asian herbal products on U.S. shelves contained arsenic
  • 35 products contained mercury
  • 24 products contained lead
  • Chan Su, which is used to treat sore throats, boils and heart palpitations, contains venomous secretions of Chinese toads, which can cause cardiac arrest or even comas.

I would be interested in whether anyone has any other information on this subject.  Let us know what you think by commenting to this post.
