I was five when my Kindergarten teacher informed my parents that I needed to see the eye doctor. That fateful trip started the long winding journey of becoming a woman with bottle caps covering my eyes. It is hard enough learning how to have beautiful skin and what Skin Care Products to use as
a teenager let alone learning how to apply makeup to your eyes pre and post contacts. As you can imagine, beauty secrets for beautiful eyes behind glasses can be very different from those blessed with 20-20 vision. From both a health and beauty perspective, the new contact wearer must adjust accordingly.
- Always put your contact lenses on before applying eye makeup. Attempting to put your contacts in after applying your eye makeup may result in severe pain if you inadvertently get even a microscopic piece of dust on the inside of the lens.
- Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching your lenses. This is the most important health and beauty tip; throughout your day you will inadvertently come in contact with creams and lotions that contain oil, this oil can damage both your lenses and your eyes. Therefore, it is imperative to always wash your hands before handling your contact lenses.
- Use only hypo-allergenic or non-allergenic makeup. Choose water-based, and/or hypoallergenic liquid foundations and mascara products.
- Avoid loose powder products. Water-based cream eye shadows are a contact wearer’s best beauty secret; it is less likely to get in your eye with color coverage that will last longer than the powder alternatives.
- Never apply any cosmetic too close to the eyeball. Never apply eyeliner inside the lid only apply eyeliner between your lashes and your eyelid, to the portion of your lashes that is well away from your eye.
- Always remove your eye makeup before you go to bed. Take care while removing makeup and always remove your lenses prior to removing your eye makeup. Tissues or dampened cotton wool are essentials tools for this in order to avoid stray fibers getting in the eye.
If you are like me, you may have some difficulty and sensitivity when you start wearing eye makeup with your contact lenses. Take care and use caution and follow the health and beauty tips above and you soon will find these new procedures old hat. Good Luck!
