Contrary to popular belief, Osteoporosis is largely preventable for most people if you take the proper steps.  Prevention of this disease is very important because, while there are treatments for Osteoporosis, there is currently no cure.

One of the most important things to remember is that building strong bones, especially before the age of 30, is the best defense there is against developing osteoporosis

Here are 5 more steps you can take.  Remember, no one step alone is enough to prevent it, but all 5 may!

  1. Get your daily recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D.  Adults under the age of 50 need 1,000 mg daily and over the age of 50 need 1,200 mg daily.  Remember that calcium supplements are not absorbed without vitamin D.  Adults under the age of 50 need 400-800 IU daily and over the age of 50 need 800-1,000 IU daily.
  2. Engage in regular weight-bearing exercise, i.e. walking, dancing, jogging, stair-climbing, racquet sports, and hiking.
  3. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol.
  4. Talk to your healthcare provider about bone health.
  5. When appropriate, have a bone density test and take medication.
