Now that I’ve entered into the wonderful first year of my 40’s, I have to admit I am starting to notice subtle changes. I’m not sure when they started or how fast they’ve come upon me, I just know that as my daughter grows and matures I’ve noticed them. For instance, her lips are so much brighter than mine, where did my color go? Her skin is so much smoother and the color is so even, how did mine get so blotchy?

Unfortunately as we age, that natural wash and go look gets harder to maintain. So how do you get your glow back and get rid of the middle aged dullness? What could possibly be the beauty secrets of those famous 40 something’s?

Beauty Tip #1: Boost cell turnover by using a foundation with AHA’s and retinols. As we age cell turnover slows which causes thickening of the skin. Therefore, light doesn’t pass through the skin like it used to. The use of the proper foundation can combat this and add to a more youthful glow.

Beauty Tip #2: Add a touch of color to the apple of your cheeks to add that youthful glow.

  • Use sheer cream or gel blush in peach or pink for light to medium skin tones.
  • Use honey or caramel tones for darker skin.

Beauty Tip #3: Collagen production also slows down as we age; causing a loss of elasticity and added droop to your eyelids. You can combat this with fuller lashes to lift the whole eye area and diminish the visibility of the eyelid. Add depth with a subtle kohl liner along the lash base and top them off with two coats of lengthening mascara.

Beauty Tip #4: Use lip liner to create luscious lips. As you age, your lips loose fullness and color, however, by tracing the corners with lip pencil this increases their dimension. Use a pencil that matches the pinkest part of the mouth and fill in where the lips are their lightest. Finish with a coat of sheer gloss or balm for a fresh youthful look

Beauty Tip #5: Choose a flattering hair style. Steer clear of the often used shorter cut. This more sensible style will actually make you look older. Opt for a shoulder length style with long subtle layers and side swept bangs for a more youthful, yet age appropriate style. If you are experiencing dullness or frizz due to declining estrogen levels, try a gloss or vegetable dye to offset and boost volume.

I have decided that the worst part of aging is the apathy that goes along with it. It is frustrating to look in the mirror and remember what used to be there naturally. The trick is to never give up! Never surrender! Remember there are plenty of skin care tips and beauty secrets out there to help you find and recapture the “natural look” you love so much.
