The World Health Organization estimates that about 1.6 billion adults are overweight, of which at least 400 million are obese, but now there may be an easy way to help you thin down and maintain your health and beauty!
Believe it or not, it was proven in a recent study at Eastern Virginia Medical School that thin people sleep an average of 2 hours per week more than overweight people.
So you ask yourself – why would sleep affect your weight? Well, researchers found that the lack of sleep results in hormonal changes that can make you gain weight.
Specifically, they found that people who don’t get enough sleep had lower levels of the appetite-suppressing hormone, leptin, and higher levels of the appetite-boosting hormone ghrelin.
Here are a couple of statistics that were realized:
- The study actually showed that after a bad night’s sleep, people ate 550 calories (22%) more than normal. This represents approximately one large hamburger.
- Feelings of hunger were higher among the group who slept four hours the previous nights vs. those who slept eight hours.
