Have you ever wondered, is there really a fountain of youth? I remember growing up, thinking that my grandfather must know where it is! He was a very handsome man, with a slightly odd skin care routine. I noticed early on, Grandpa only showered every other day and he used mild skin care soap throughout the house.
Obviously there is always a good deal of genetics involved, but I really think he had found that fountain by adopting a daily skin routine that kept his pH balance optimal, which slowed the signs of aging. What is your skin pH? Based on a scale of one to fourteen, a pH measures the levels of alkaline and acid in a substance. In the middle, at approximately seven is the neutral level for your body, but ironically not your skin. For healthy youthful looking skin, you need to maintain a range from 4–6.5, which is slightly acidic. How? Pay attention to what you use around your skin, beauty tip #1!
The naturally acidic environment or “acid mantle” of your skin is very important to maintain. Therefore, one of your most important skin care tips should be to reduce your exposure to overly alkaline products, just like gramps! But how do you know what to look for?
Skin Care Tip – Alkaline stronger than a pH8 is very irritating to your skin.
- Most skin care soaps have a pH factor between 9 and 11.
- Many household cleaners are between 10 and 12.
- Oven cleaners top the chart at 13.
So what to do?
- Always take care of your skin by wearing gloves when using cleaning products around the house.
- Read the labels of all your skin care beauty products. Look for products with a proper pH level between 4.5–6.0. (pH balanced products available at http://budurl.com/l32x)
You see bacteria cannot survive in an acidic environment, thus if your acid mantle is disrupted, the skin becomes more susceptible to damage which in turn causes aging. Therefore maintaining the correct level of acidity is vital to your beauty skin care regime. Now seeing as I never saw my grandpa clean the stove or use household cleaners; and as I already indicated he had affinity to mild body soaps, it would seem his natural, if old-fashioned lifestyle helped him maintain his good looks well into his 90’s.

Thanks for yet another informative article, I enjoyed reading it. I always try to read and understand all the ingredients in my products, however trying to remember which ingredients are the best and at what level they should be is sometimes difficult. Is it a bad thing to shower everday, sometimes twice a day?? I shower everyday because I feel more alert and ready for the day and sometimes in the evening before bed to help me relax and more importantly remove all the oils and dirt from the day. I do however always apply my moisturizers. Thanks Again
