I Haven’t Shampooed My Hair in Months

Okay – this will probably sound crazy at first, but I haven’t shampooed my hair in over 8 months.

I know, you’re imagining a head full of dreadlocks, or just dirty, oily, strings of hair. But – it’s the exact opposite. My hair and my scalp look and feel amazing.

I got the idea from my stylist (you can find a great stylist at Rush.co.uk, by the way). She told me that she had heard great things from other clients who had stopped using shampoo on their hair.

You’ve probably seen the commercials selling products that are “sulfate free”. These shampoos promise to be more gentle on your hair and scalp… but being “more” gentle doesn’t mean that they are the most gentle option for your hair.

By getting rid of the shampoo completely, you remove the drying, stripping chemicals that take away natural oils, shine and color.

How to “Not” Shampoo Your Hair

Even though you may not use shampoo, you’ll still need to wash your hair. Here is how to go about it:

  1. Start with a really good rinse. You’d be surprised how much product, dirt and pollutants you can remove from your hair with clean water. So, rinse your hair and your scalp.
  2. Next, massage in a light conditioner. (I use a $1.99 bottle of Suave Naturals.)
  3. Comb the conditioner through your hair and let it sit for 5 minutes
  4. Rinse the conditioner out of your hair
  5. Massage in a second helping of conditioner
  6. Rinse thoroughly

For the first few days, you’ll feel strange. But, stick with it.

After 5-7 days, you’ll start to see a noticable difference in the shine, the bounce and the managability of your hair. It will look and feel so much better. It will be easier to style – and it will hold the style all day long without coats of hairspray and other product.

Since you won’t be stripping and drying out your hair with shampoo – your scalp won’t be trying so hard to replace the oils you’ve stripped. Even those of you with oily hair will notice a more balanced scalp and better overall texture.

Don’t believe me? Talk with your stylist the next time you’re at the salon and see what she or he has heard from other clients. Or – just give it a try yourself! You’ll be surprised!
