Celebrity Beauty Tips – Valerie Bertinelli
We all know Valerie Bertinelli from the 40 pounds of weight she lost through Jenny Craig. And, amazingly, she’s kept it off for 2 or 3 years now. In a recent interview, Valerie talks about her weight management strategies, the Boston Marathon, and offers some free health and beauty secrets.
What helps you stay on track? "It’s really about portion control. You can have anything you want if you don’t eat the whole thing. So, have a little bit now, and maybe in a week or two go back to the same restaurant and have some more. Don’t think you’re never going to be able to eat certain foods again. Nothing is ever as good as that first bite anyway."
What foods do you have no control over? "Well, I shouldn’t keep sourdough bread in the house, because I love sourdough toast. And Hot Tamales – those cinnamon candies? Love those. So, when I’m in the supermarket and I think, God I really want those, I’ll remind myself that in 2 days when I have a weak moment, I’ll go straight for them. So, there are certain things I just won’t buy."
Your Fiancé, Tom Vitale, must give you a lot of support. What does he say when you’re struggling? "Honey, you really don’t want that, do you?" But, sometimes I’ll hear that and go, "Why? What are you trying to tell me?" Lately, Tom and I have been cooking a lot – grilling chicken and veggies, making turkey meatballs…
Did you get any unexpected benefits from losing weight? "I stopped snoring as much, which was probably a good thing for Tom. And I have more energy, without a doubt. I could offer too much information!"

Now, Back to More Questions and Answers
You finished the Boston Marathon 4 days before turning 50. Were there any moments when you thought you might not make it? "Around mile 7, I had to pee so bad, and I’m like, Okay, I’m not going in the bushes like all these guys! I came across a fast-food restaurant and I’m like, Do I dare? And then I ran over there! And mile 16 just beat my butt – that was the final real hill. I went, Oh, I’m not ready for this?"
But you did it! In 5:14. "I’m still proud of myself. I’m not going to be embarrassed that it took me over 5 hours. It’s pretty remarkable for someone like me, who never thought I could be a runner. So, yeah, I’m going to give myself some credit. I knew it was going to be difficult, and it was, but I‘m really glad that I did it!"
What were your training runs like? "From 5-8 miles a day. On weekends, a superlong run. The longest I ran before the marathon was 19 miles. Now, I’ll do 2½ up to maybe 5 miles and, if I feel like going longer, maybe I’ll do a 10-K."
Are there times you struggle with running as a workout? "I still hate the first 20 minutes of running. I’m like, Am I really doing this again? But it really does de-stress me. And I like going outside. I don’t want to be stuck in a gym."
Do you have any other big fitness goals? "I want to do a triathlon at the end of the year, a spring triathlon. I also want to do more weight training. I want to bring up my lean muscle mass and build bone density, which is important as you get older."
What’s it like to reach the milestone of 50? "For me, it’s just another age, just another number. I’m still kicking, my heart’s still beating, my lungs are still breathing, so that’s good."
