Dressing Sexy Over 40 – Elegant and Sleek
I have a closet full of clothes and NOTHING TO WEAR! How about you?
Once you hit the magic age of 40, getting dressed once again becomes a real pain.
You don't want to look like you're trying too hard, you don't want to wear something that's wrong for your body type and you NEVER want to end up looking like an OLD LADY!
I asked style experts to share their tips for keeping your wardrobe elegant and sleek so that you can feel confident and sexy (even though the calendar says you're over 40!). Here are tips from three experts that I thought were a perfect fit:
Lynn Werner Says: Wear Sexy
Wear clothes and swimwear that makes you feel sexy (and not over-exposed in the wrong areas!). Try board shorts instead of bikinis if you don't like your lower body. Try a tankini for the upper body; find a swimsuit that flatters you – not the person in the magazine.
Orene Kearn Says: Incorporate 1-2 Fashion Trends at a Time
Looking stylish and sexy over 40 can be a difficult challenge – it is a balancing act between dressing too matronly and dressing too young. To avoid looking like a "Fashion Victim" (wearing too many trends at once) or looking a bit dowdy and boring, you should incorporate one, perhaps two, current trends to wear at a time, and make sure it is a trend you feel comfortable with. For example, if you choose to wear a "statement necklace" then go for a simple earring. If you are wearing one of this spring's trends, a floral print blouse or dress, then wearing stacking bracelets, a leather jacket and gladiator sandals all at once will be too much…
…You can also incorporate many current fashion trends in a modified, toned-down way. For example, rather than purchase boots or a bag with studs and other hardware all over them, try finding one with just a bit of hardware so it isn't too edgy.
Kami Gray Says: No More Matching – No More Rules
Stop Matching Everything: Your shoes, purse, and belt do NOT have to match and [doing so] shows your age because it's a very old-school rule. Mix it up with tones that compliment each other like gray, brown, navy, and black.
Flip-flop Dressier Items: Instead of dressing up a collared blouse and blazer combo with your pearls and delicate jewelry; do practically the opposite. Pair that blazer up with a tunic-length t-shirt and some chunky, glam jewelry, and a patent leather skinny belt.
Wear Something Unexpected: Hit the streets for inspiration. Use trend-setters you see and borrow one idea and incorporate it into your ensemble. I'm not about to go punk from head to toe, but a black leather cuff would be just the thing to pair with a pale pink blazer worn over a white t-shirt, your favorite bootcut jeans, and a pair of metallic wedge sandals.
Throw the Rules out the Window: Forget about age appropriate. Wear what you like, what matches your personality, and what makes you feel good. Trust your instincts. Don't get stuck because you're over 40 or you're a Mom. Be the shining star you are meant to be at this age and all ages to come and let go of age rules and restrictions.
Thanks, Lynn, Orene and Kami! That was all great advice!
