Seven Deadly Sins That Launch You Into Accelerated Aging

Accelerated AgingI’m not the Food Police. I’m not perfect and don’t claim to be. In fact, when I see people eating in ways that are horribly detrimental to their health, I shut up. But it kills me to watch them chipping away at their health. Even if I did say something, the tragic reality is that in our sophisticated, intelligent, educated country, I’m the nutcase. What’s nutty to me is that people have absorbed so much misinformation from the media, that although they think they are eating and living healthy, they’re really doing a lot of damage.

It used to be that when people got old they developed “the degenerative diseases of aging.” Today children are developing heart disease, strokes, type-2 diabetes, and cancer. And people of all ages are suffering from chronic illness. Even very young people can look older than their years.  This is accelerated aging, which is caused by breaking down more than you build back up again.
There’s nothing you can do about the passage of time. But there’s a lot you can do to stop breaking down more than you build back up again, i.e., to prevent and reverse accelerated aging. I’ve spent the last fifteen years learning how to do that. Because most of what I preach is contrary to what you’ll hear from the media, even though people can grasp the not-breaking-down-more-than-building-back-up again concept, it’s sometimes hard to actually act and make changes.  The truth is just too unbelievable, too scary, too different. Too nutty.
Consider that the human body is dynamic. That’s means that it’s constantly breaking and building back up again. Just like you wouldn’t live in a house for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 or more years without maintaining that house, your body needs building supplies for maintenance and the ongoing remodeling. My program, which is designed to maintain the integrated systems of your mind, body, and spirit, can be summed up simply as “building up more than you break down.”  It’s so simple.
There are many factors that contribute to accelerated aging. But there are Seven Deadly Sins I see a lot. If these were eliminated, it would vastly improve Americans collective health.

  • Drinking coffee and skipping breakfast
  • Eating low fat
  • Drinking Diet Coke
  • Eating refined grains instead of a balanced diet including proteins and fats
  • Eating sweets instead of a meal
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Consuming too much salt

Drinking Coffee and Skipping Breakfast

This is code red dangerous behavior. You can get away with skipping breakfast and drinking coffee for a while, but sooner or later your body will have to deal with this very precarious situation of famine and chaos. One end result is weight gain. Obesity is 35 to 50 percent higher in people who skip breakfast compared to those who eat breakfast.
When you wake up you’ve already been fasting for at least eight hours, probably more like ten or even twelve. Your blood sugar is too low so if you don’t eat food your adrenals will release cortisol to mobilize sugar from your inner stores called glycogen. As soon as this sugar hits the bloodstream, what is not immediately used up is stored away again. Blood sugar crashes. This cycle continues until about mid-morning when people then feel ravenous and the gorging on refined carbs begins. This is extremely fattening, but it’s not the only reason breakfast skippers are overweight.
If you add caffeine to skipping breakfast it’s even worse because stimulants also stimulate the release of the stress hormone cortisol from your adrenals. At one point cortisol will actually break down lean body mass (muscle and bone) to convert it to sugar. All of this is utter chaos to your body and in time, you will break down way more than you build back up again.
It’s also important to note that you want to keep your hormones balanced and humming along harmoniously. With cortisol, and insulin being released throughout the morning, you’ve got a lot of unnecessary hormonal activity going on. When one hormone gets out of whack your entire endocrine system is compromised. What happens hormonally due to chronic fasting is a classic and very damaging example. Because eventually your adrenals will be so overtaxed by this ongoing state of emergency that they will call on your thyroid to down regulate. Now you have a lot of stress hormones and insulin flowing, low thyroid function. This is a very inefficient metabolism. So now you’re fat.

Eating Low Fat

You’re already creating chaos by not eating breakfast and drinking coffee but you’re fat so you think that you shouldn’t eat fat, but that is even more damaging. Fat is used to make hormones, which are the chemical communication system of your body. (You just read how your adrenal hormones signaled to your thyroid to down regulate. This is just one example.)
Have you ever remodeled your home or done any kind of construction? And have you have had experiences with contractors where wished you knew Tony Soprano personally? Okay, well imagine that your body is you, and it’s standing around every day thinking where are my building supplies? What does she/he expect me to use to repair cells, make neurotransmitters and hormones?
In a perfect world, you would eat fat, and lots of it. This would repair and rebuild you toward optimal health. Examples of healthy fats are: Butter, cream, whole, raw milk, the fat off red meat, chicken fat, coconut oil, red palm oil, cod liver oil, primrose, borage, and black current oils.
And in case you don’t know by now, examples of toxic fats are: Corn, cottonseed, canola, soy, safflower, and sunflower, and anything made with these fats such as partially hydrogenated margarine, shortening and factory food products containing these fats.

Drinking Diet Coke

I’m perfectly aware that there are other diet drinks, but isn’t Diet Coke the classic? It’s associated with thin, glossy lipped bikini clad girls. But in reality, the vast majority of people drinking Diet Coke are overweight or obese. They generally look puffy and bloated due to aspartame related water retention. But aspartame is also fattening because any taste of sweet causes the pancreas to release insulin. So even if you’re not eating, your body is still going to respond with cortisol and insulin as described above. Clinical studies demonstrate that people are fatter using aspartame than not. And, aspartame metabolizes into formaldehyde, which degrades cellular structures, which means that you’re going to have a lot more cellulite if you drink Diet Coke.
Drinking Diet Coke puts you at risk of MS, lupus, seizures, tinnitus and many other horrible diseases and conditions. It also contributes to depression and addiction by altering serotonin and dopamine in your brain. With low levels of these happy neurotransmitters you are going to crave . . . and binge.

Eating Refined grains Instead of a Balanced Diet Including Proteins and Fats

And of course you are going to binge on refined grains. Grains in general are kind of an issue, since grains weren’t part of Paleolithic (hunter/gatherer) diet for millions of years, and weren’t eaten by humans until 10,000 years ago when agriculture first developed. Prior to that time, humans consumed carbs in relatively indigestible forms in nuts, berries, and roots.
Now, just a few short years after developing the agriculture to grow grains, people eat tons (literally) of factory foods made from genetically modified grains that have had their coarse outer husks removed (that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber). The resultant stripped flour is combined with synthetic vitamins and minerals that were created in a laboratory, and formed into any number of very weird so-called food substances.
Calling Tony Soprano again. Eating refined grains in factory food is not going to supply your body with building supplies. So now your body is standing around saying, “What the hey?” and things begin to go wrong.
Real food is anything that could picked, gathered, milked, hunted, or fished, that grown or raised in a clean environment and that has had any science fiction processing done to it. Real whole, living food contains the perfect ratios of naturally occurring amino acids (protein), fatty acids (fats), vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and enzymes that are necessary to maintain healthy metabolic processes. If you eat a balanced diet of real, whole, living food you will build up more than you break down.

Eating Sweets Instead of a Meal

Women are more guilty of this than men because men will generally eat a meal and then eat desert, while women will eat the desert instead of eating food. Let’s say you don’t do this every day, and you even eat really well two out of seven days. So you’re talking about 261 days a year that your body is breaking down more than it’s building back up again. That is in addition to the fact if you eat a lot of sugar and don’t eat a lot of foods containing, say, B vitamins every day (meats, whole grains, legumes, green leafy veggies, dairy, citrus and so on), you’ll become depleted of B vitamins and can ultimately suffer from a burning sensation on your tongue, wrinkles surrounding your lips, exhaustion, gastrointestinal problems, thinning, graying hair, and depression. These are only some of the problems that occur as a result of the vitamin and mineral depletion caused by over-consuming sugar.
Eating sugar also depletes your body of antibodies, which roam your body eliminating foreign viruses, bacteria and yeasts and so in your depleted state you get every cold and flu that goes around. Sugar causes type-2 diabetes, plaquing of the coronary arteries, and fuels unnatural hunger.
The cherry on top of all of this is that sugar is cancer fertilizer. I’m not saying live like a monk, only that you need to be aware that eating sugar is Russian-roulette. You never know when that cartridge is going to hit the chamber. We are all at risk of cancer given our toxic environment, but why vociferously fuel cancer cells by living on sugar?

Not Drinking Enough Water

One of my major influences is neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock, who wrote the foreword to Healthy, Sexy, Happy. According to Dr. Blaylock as many as 78 percent of Americans are so dehydrated that the majority of people admitted to the hospital for the flu are really just parched. Second to oxygen, water is the second most important nutrient to survival. (We can live three weeks without food, three days without water, and three minutes without oxygen.)
Dehydration is so aging! Just notice how wrinkly people are who don’t drink enough water—or those who substitute coffee, which makes you pee, dehydrating you further.  To assist your body in building up more than it breaks down, drink one half of your body weight in ounces of purified water every day.

Consuming Way Too Much Salt

More frequently than I would like I have to return meals to the kitchen because the food is just too salty. Once you stop eating salt, restaurant food can be indelibly salty. At the same time, I’m surprised at how many diners reach for the saltshaker and out comes the snowstorm.
Current research demonstrates that only ten percent of the population suffering from hypertension needs to restrict salt intake. Our bodies contain fluids (such as blood plasma and lymphatic fluids) that closely resemble the electrical balance and chemical composition of ocean water. We need a little salt to replace the salt that is lost through daily sweating and urinating. Our adrenal glands need sodium to function properly. If you have very low blood pressure, it could be an indication of adrenal fatigue, and a little more salt could benefit you. But there’s a difference between out of control cravings and cravings for something your body needs.
Most of the time when people crave salt it’s because their taste buds have adapted to that salty taste from eating factory food. The way to break this habit is to switch to a diet of real food and wean down to a teenie amount every day, say one teaspoon total. And use sea salt, which contains all of the minerals your body’s systems require. Sea salt naturally contains trace minerals, sodium, and potassium salts.
How you act from this day forward will define the rest of your life. Continuing the Seven Deadly Sins will break you down faster than you build back up again (accelerated aging). Optimal health comes from building up more than you break down.
Peace, Fun, Love.

Accelerated Aging
