Kegels in Your Car!
In yoga, the Bandhas, energetic locks, are practiced to foster awareness and generate internal energy and heat. During practice the lifting of your pelvic floor, called mulabhanda, and the drawing up of your lower abdomen, called uddiyana bandha, also provides strength, heat, and energy. These techniques provide stability throughout your practice.
Kegel exercises were developed by Dr. Arnold Kegel to build up the pubococcygeus (PC) muscles of the pelvic floor in women to help endure pregnancy and vaginal childbirth, and to prevent vaginal and uterine prolapse, and in men to treat prostate pain and swelling resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement) and prostatitis (chronic pain). Pelvic floor exercises help correct urinary incontinence in both men and women. This exercise increases sexual pleasure.
Mulabandha is the same as Kegels as you contract the muscles of the pelvic floor in a “lock” during your practice. Think of cinching the muscles that you contract stop the flow of urine. The purpose of mulabandha is to provide a foundation for your yoga practice, but doing so over a period of time strengthens the pelvic floor. Strengthening the PC muscle increases sexual pleasure by tightening the vagina in women, and helping men avoid premature ejaculation. Strengthening the PC muscle can resolve impotence, depending on the cause.
Whether you practice mulabandha or kegels, strengthening your pelvic floor muscles is part of a maintaining overall health. In our busy lifestyles, kegels are often forgotten even when we resolve to remember to do them. The best way to get any exercise program established is to have a coach. I developed the Kegels In Your Car audio program http://kegelsinyourcar.com with two exercise sessions, one to do on the way to your destination, and the second to do on your way home. With Kegels In Your Car you can utilize the time you spend every day stuck in traffic, making exercising your PC muscle convenient, gratifying, and fun.
Peace, Fun, Love.
