When I was growing up, I always looked forward to certain ages – 10 – in the ‘double digits’ now. 13 – now you’re a teen. 18 – the age of majority. 19 or 21 – drinking age depending on what state or time you grew up. After that, the years just weren’t fun to count anymore.
I’ve found that especially true after I hit 40 as far as my body was concerned. It just doesn’t want to work like it did when I was 21. But, I don’t give up easily, and I decided I’d find a way to keep my fat-burning engine going from now – til ever. The secret? Keep doing what I’ve always done – stay active, and keep hitting the gym.
Just because we are gaining in maturity, doesn’t mean we should stop exercising. In fact, just the opposite is true. And, if you haven’t done resistance weight training ever in your life, ANYtime is a good time to start.
As we age, we naturally lose our skeletal muscle. Yet the most important body component to try and maintain is the very muscle we are losing. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns – even at rest! What does this mean? It means you get to eat more than you otherwise could – without getting fatter – and who doesn’t like that? Muscle helps stabilize your body and prevent injury, and the more muscle you have, the more you can keep up with your kids, nieces and nephews, or your pets.
Even seniors who spend just ten to fifteen minutes per day with resistance training still see and feel the benefits. Women – if you have refrained from adding weights to your workout because you think you will end up getting too big and bulky and looking like a guy I’ve got good news. It doesn’t happen from working out hard at the gym – that’s a myth. The real secret to keep burning fat into your 40s and beyond, is to add resistance weight training. Those who have the easiest time losing weight have been doing this for ages.
