4 Fitness Tips for Making New Year’s Resolutions Stick

Making a New Years Resolution is the easy step.  Sticking with it is a whole other story.  Are you tired of making resolutions and frustrated when you never see them through?  I know that feeling.  It’s easier not to make one at all than to set myself up again for another failure.

I have a theory, though.  If we want something bad enough, eventually we experience a “click” and somehow find the strength to make it happen.  So, if getting in shape is one of your New Years Resolutions (and it’s not the first time), try using these 4 fitness tips for making 2012 your year for results.

1) Get off the couch

We know that it can be tough to get started with a fitness routine, but there are three keys to success that we recommend to help you stick with it. First, get off the couch. Remember in high school when you had an important test to study for? You could either study at home in your bedroom, or head to the library. If you studied at home, you would end up getting distracted by other things. But at the library, you were focused and motivated by the fact that everyone else around you was studying too. Same thing goes for working out. By joining a dedicated fitness club, it increases motivation and makes you more likely to get your workouts done.

2) Add weight training to your workouts

Want to get better results? Try incorporating weight resistance exercise alongside your cardio. You will increase your metabolism by adding weight training and still burn calories on your choice of cardio.

Try this as an example: Instead of going for a one hour run outside, try spending 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes of weight training. You will be amazed by the results you’ll get from shocking your body into a different workout routine. They say variety is the spice of life, and it can help add some new flavor to your workout routine too!

3) Find a professional

Are you intimidated by the weight room and don’t know where to start? Try working with a certified personal trainer to get you on the right track. They’ll help you create a plan that’s right for you. Even if you’ve been exercising on your own for years, a trainer can help you add some variety and take your workouts to new heights!

4) Find new ways to stay motivated

Finally, it’s important to stay engaged once the initial excitement has worn off.
